St. John's Jesuit

Butler

Matt Butler '09

Coach Matt Butler '09 is set to begin his second season at the helm of the St. John's Jesuit hockey program, after being named Head Coach in November of 2023. The 2023-24 season marked his sixth season as a coach for the Titans and his first as head coach.

Butler '09 started as a JV assistant coach in 2014 and returned to the team as a varsity assistant coach in 2019, a position he held until becoming head coach. He was a member of the 2007 State Championship team and captain of the 2009 state runner-up team.

Coach Butler '09 has strong roots in the local hockey community as he grew up playing in the Sylvania travel hockey program before joining the Titans. After graduating from SJJ, he went on to Bowling Green State University where he was a member of the club hockey program, leading the Falcons to two national championship appearances.

Director of Athletics Bob Ronai said, "We are looking forward to Coach Butler's leadership of the SJJ hockey program. I am excited about Matt's enthusiasm for SJJ and his excitement and passion for what this challenge holds for him."

He is married with one son and works as a firefighter paramedic for the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department, and as a member of the Region One water rescue and dive team.
