Coach Jim Davis '70 has been the St. John's Jesuit head tennis coach since 2005. His team won the State Team Title in 2011 and he coached the Singles State Champion in the same year. In 2014, he coached the pairs state runners-up. He also led the Titans to the state Final Four 14 years in a row. Most recently, the Titans reached the DI State Team Final Four in 2023.
In 2022, he coached the doubles team of Tyler Wood and Jack Oswald in the DI State Doubles Tournament. Wood then reached the DI State Singles Tournament in 2023.
Previously, the Titans won the TRAC Championship for seven consecutive years, since the inception of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference through 2018. Most recently, the Titans finished as TRAC Champions in 2021.
Coach Davis was also named the TRAC Coach of the Year in 2016. In 2019, Coach Davis recorded his 300th career win as the Titans Head Coach!
In 2011, he was named Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations which encompasses the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington D.C. He is also one of 350 USPTA Master Professionals in the United States.
While at the University of Toledo, he was a four year letter winner and his team won the Mid American Conference title in 1971 and 1973. Coach Davis was the MAC Singles Champion in 1973, while winning the MAC Doubles Championship in 1971, 1972, and 1973. In his tournament playing career, he was ranked #1 in Men's Singles in the Midwest in 1978 and 1988. During that time, he was ranked in the Top 10 for 10 years in a row. He was named the USPTA Ohio Professional of the Year in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, & 1992. Coach Davis was named 1992 Midwest Professional of the Year in 1992 and named USPTA National Professional of the Year in 1993. He graduated from the University of Toledo in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
He is a managing partner of Shadow Valley Tennis and Fitness Club. Coach Davis is married to Diana and they have five children: James, Alexa, Julie, Chelsea and David.
